Keyword detection bilingual system (Hydro-Québec)

Problematic client definition

Hydro-Québec was arraigned before the FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) by an American company accusing it of market tampering. For its defense in court, Hydro-Québec was required to present recordings of conversations between brokers to demonstrate that no attempt of tampering had been made.

The main problem was to retrieve relevant conversations (containing certain keywords) within the entire set of recordings involving brokers. To be admitted as evidence, the search system had to be 95% accurate.

Mandate challenge

In addition to the required high precision rate, the time assigned for analyzing tens of thousands of hours of conversations was extremely limited (6 weeks). We thus had to develop a high-performance system in a very short time.

In addition, recording conditions were difficult. Indeed, they corresponded to telephone conversations, in both French and English, recorded under hand free conditions with background noise such as radio or television.

Solution developed by CRIM

We developed a bilingual (in French and English) keyword detection system under a very tight deadline.

Impact on the company

The most resounding impact of this work for Hydro-Québec was to win its case before the FERC.

Fallout for the company

Hydro-Québec now possesses an efficient system of conversation analysis that has a deterrent effect on competitors seeking to put forth accusations on unsubstantiated grounds.

CRIM stands out

We have developed a bilingual (French and English) system that allows in finding 97% of relevant conversations contained in a very large database. In addition, our system is robust with respect to background noises and works with low quality recordings.
