CRIM welcomes the awarding of a $2.2 million research infrastructure grant

Montréal, February 23, 2010

Daniel Blanche, CEO of the Centre de recherche informatique de Montréal (CRIM), the Quebec-based IT research centre, welcomed today’s announcement by the Quebec Department of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade (MDEIE) that it would be providing CRIM with financial assistance in the amount of $2,206,400 under the Research Support Program, Part 2: Support for Research Infrastructure Financing.

The announcement was made by Gerry Sklavounos, Member of the National Assembly for Laurier-Dorion, on behalf of Clément Gignac, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade.

Mr. Blanche said: “In light of the fact that our research teams and their technological prospects are resolutely cutting-edge, this financial support for research infrastructure is sure to benefit all members of Quebec’s IT industrial community.”

Jacques Ouellet, CRIM’s Senior Vice-President for R&D and Marketing, added: “This assistance will reinforce CRIM’s ability to move forward with projects and transfers in areas such as audiovisual content indexing, video description, human/computer interaction, surveillance, intelligent use of content and language learning.”

The main components to be upgraded include the network of R&D workstations and high-performance calculators, as well as storage-related infrastructure, specialized laboratory equipment and next-generation infrastructure.

This assistance will also enable CRIM’s research teams to step up their participation in networks and projects across Canada and around the world. CRIM seeks to ensure that appropriate infrastructure is in place to establish alliances between institutions (e.g. universities, colleges, research centres and the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists) and businesses with a view to completing major projects.
