CRIM AND CLOUD.CA PROPEL VESTA INTO THE CLOUD

A cloud computing solution for an innovative annotation platform

Montréal, March 21, 2017 – CRIM is pleased to announce the renewal of its partnership with cloud.ca, Canada’s cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), developed by Montréal cloud solutions expert, CloudOps. This partnership allows CRIM to make the demo version of VESTA available to the public by deploying it on cloud.ca.

This collaboration provides important value for VESTA’s deployment. “Canadian data residency, compatibility with automation tools, an intuitive and easy to use user interface, together with the option to deploy with Docker, offer considerable advantages when demonstrating VESTA”, says André Lapointe, CRIM Director of Innovation & of the Emerging Technologies and Data Science Team.

We are pleased to offer our infrastructure for this innovative, cutting-edge project. We support CRIM’s initiative to accelerate technological advances in Montréal,” explains Mike Gero, VP Product and Business Development at cloud.ca.

cloud.ca is a Canadian-owned and operated cloud infrastructure, with deployments in two regions (Québec and Ontario). It is ideal for digital organizations and for DevOps teams. cloud.ca’s platform works as a standalone IaaS and also fits perfectly into hybrid and multi-cloud solutions, allowing a mix of private cloud (OpenStack, Apache CloudStack) and other public cloud infrastructures such as Amazon Web Services.

VESTA (Video Evaluation System for Task Analysis) is a collaborative timeline based annotation platform of multimedia content. VESTA was designed with a view to providing the Canadian scientific community with a collaborative platform dedicated to audio and video analysis and annotation. In addition to its many leading-edge manual annotation capabilities, the tool boasts five (5) semi-automatic annotation services for recordings:1) Speaker segmentation; 2) Speech-to-text; 3) Text-audio matching; 4) Video shot transition detection, and 5) Face pose analysis. These services, integrated into the platform, are deployed independently and may therefore be used in all other web platforms.

Initially, the project focusing on educational sciences and financed through the CANARIE Research Software Program, was custom-made for the LEADS (Learning Environments Across Disciplines) research network. CRIM, which puts transfer to industry at the centre of its priorities, wished to make VESTA available to Québec businesses and organizations, both inside and outside the scientific and educational sectors. Thanks to the partnership with cloud.ca, a demo version of the platform is now available, free of charge, for use by all organizations that have audio and video to analyze. The virtual machines available on cloud.ca have made it possible, and simple, for CRIM to deploy this demo version by way of a new generation of deployment tools based on container technology. This will make it easy for any organization interested in a more intensive use of VESTA to have a tailor-made version deployed through cloud.ca. Development of VESTA will continue in the coming years, with CRIM researchers planning to develop additional annotation platforms that will complement VESTA.
