Caroline Barrière joined CRIM in November 2010 as an expert researcher specializing in
semantics, terminology, ontology and natural language processing.
Caroline holds a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering (1989) and a master’s degree in
electrical engineering (1991) from Montréal’s École Polytechnique. She also holds a doctorate in
computer science from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia (1997), focusing on natural
language processing and proposing a methodology for semi-automatic ontology construction from
electronic dictionary.
Caroline was an associate professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Information
Technology and Engineering (SITE) from 1997 to 2003, during which time she pursued her research
into knowledge representation and automatic knowledge extraction from text. Her other areas of
interest included the development of language learning tools, the automatic generation of bilingual
lexicons and the automatic disambiguation of ambiguous words.
From 2003 to 2010, Caroline was a research officer in the Interactive Language Technologies
Group, a division of the National Research Council’s Institute for Information Technology. She
primarily focused on computational terminology, targeting specialized language and investigating
the semi-automatic construction of Web-based specialized corpora and the extraction of definitional
information from these corpora. She was also interested in bilingual terminology and equivalent
term searches in bilingual corpora.
