Offered by the CRIM Testing and Interoperability Centre (TIC), the
service PRET (Performance on Extended Telecommunications Networks) helps you avoid
networked software performance issues. This unique testing service involves submitting and/or
analysing software placed in the hostile conditions of wide-area telecommunications networks, such
as the Internet or a private WAN.
PRET can step up at one of two stages:
-
Once the software is deployed:
Your software is already in use, but users complain of the wait time for effective execution
of their tasks.
Operations performance is insufficient or inadequate; what's more, it is uneven over the
course of the day. By measuring network operations generated by your application, CRIM TIC experts
are able to help you identify bottlenecks and find solutions. CRIM's mobile lab can be installed in
your offices to analyse system behaviour in its environment. Before investing major sums in
correcting problems, aim for the targets with PRET's help!
-
Before using the software:
Your team is getting ready to use new software on your network or that of a client or
partner.
To ensure the success of the operation, you must first ask yourself several questions:
- As we define requirements, are we considering the performance and robustness of the application
to be used?
- If so, do we have the means to test these qualities adequately and effectively?
- How many simultaneous users can our system support?
- What are our bandwidth needs?
- What impact does latency have on performance?
- How big should our server be?
As the saying goes, better safe than sorry! With the help of the CRIM team's WAN emulation and
velocity ratio tools, you will now be proactive in identifying your needs and systems' limits
before deployment.
