A new collection of video described movies in French produced by CRIM for BAnQ

This two-year project in digital accessibility and e-inclusion led to the launch, in 2017, of a brand new collection of 30 movies of all genres, from Quebec and France, adapted for the visually impaired by CRIM's Vision and Imaging Team and available for free through BAnQ.

CRIM's unique computer-assisted videodescription production tool significantly increases the number of works that can be adapted for a given budget, thus contributing to making cultural content universally accesssible.

CRIM's Vision and Imaging Team has been working on this leading-edge video description technology since 2005.

This initiative has been made possible thanks to the Programme de soutien à la valorisation et au transfert (PSVT) section 2 of the Ministère de l'Économie, de la Science et de l'Innovation (MESI) with the collaboration of BAnQ. CRIM also wishes to thank all the participants in the test studies for the DVDPlayer software. These enabled researchers to optimize the user experience and better respond to the specific needs of the visually impaired.

The movies are available for free to rent at the Grande Bibliothèque in Montréal, and they can also be mailed anywhere in Québec. A subscription for BAnQ is free, and this service is offered to all persons living with a visual disability.

This is one of many applied research projects that aims to foster social inclusion through the use of innovative technology. To learn more about CRIM’s other projects in social innovation, click here!
