The STORM project at CGI


Context: The famous “travelling salesman problem” refers to the type of work that aims to optimize journeys to cover a predefined set of geographical points. Such problems notably arise during severe interruptions to electricity supply networks such as those caused by ice storms in Quebec or hurricanes in the United States. CGI, a multinational of Montréal origin, faces such challenges as part of its outage management operations for electricity supply systems.

ProjectThe multinational CGI collaborated with CRIM to design the “Intelligent Decision Support System for Storms” module to optimize the recovery of electrical networks in the event of major breakdowns. CRIM developed the technology and contributed to its pre-commercialization. For CGI, the advantage of working with CRIM is to have given the company access to specialized resources in mathematics and algorithms that it did not have, its expertise being primarily operational. The module has been integrated with CGI software and is available for sale to power distribution companies. The project with CRIM has enabled CGI to regain its leading position in the United States and break into the European market.
