Knowledge engineering, ontology and thesaurus

Semantic Web (or Web of data) groups billions of information triples (subject-predicate-object expressions). These triples allow for encoding knowledge according to a standard format (RDF) that is widely supported by the computer science community. Although this encoded information contains a wealth of information, it nevertheless is associated with noise. Several research efforts are aimed at analyzing and distilling this information to make it amenable for use in various softwares.

Ontologies serve to model knowledge as a set of concepts within a domain. The underlying methods of representation also allow for analyzing these knowledges. Various tools are used for developing and visualizing these ontologies. In this respect, a particularly important device is the semi-automatic construction of ontologies, and this leads us to the area of natural language processing described below.
