FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montréal, August 1, 2014 ― The Computer Research Institute of Montréal (CRIM) is proud to announce a partnership with the Vancouver Institute for Visual Analytics (VIVA) taking the form of mutual memberships.

“In addition to expanding their respective reach across Canada, this partnership will allow researchers associated with both organizations to develop innovative and collaborative projects involving visualization and analytics.” says Dr. Fred Popowich, Director of VIVA, and Professor of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University. “VIVA’s initiatives and its numerous collaborators in the field of visual analytics arrive at the right moment in regard to current and future projects at CRIM. It will allow us to accelerate some of our strategic initiatives. Several exciting project possibilities based on concrete use cases could benefit from our hardware and software infrastructure as well as our advanced analytical tools, particularly for unstructured data.” says Daniel Blanche, General Manager at CRIM.

VIVA and CRIM share a comparable positioning between industry and academia, relying on complementary expertise in both domains. CRIM provides advanced analytics solutions based on speech, image, text and geospatial data. It also possesses a solid expertise in Web architectures, including Big Data technologies. VIVA facilitates, promotes and transfer research in visual analytics and supports the development of interactive visualization tools and techniques that aid the interactive exploration of very large data sets.

In the coming months, CRIM and VIVA will facilitate collaborative scenarios and explore new project opportunities based on programs from relevant agencies such as Mitacs Inc., GRAND NCE, NSERC and CANARIE, as well as programs of the provincial governments of Québec and British Columbia.
