Understanding and countering misinformation in the age of AI
Misinformation is a major threat to society today, amplified by the rise of generative AI, which facilitates the creation of misleading content on a massive scale.
Faced with this challenge, CRIM is developing technological countermeasures to detect, analyze and understand information manipulation, in an ethical and responsible way.
Technological expertise for the common good
CRIM develops advanced tools to combat misinformation, including :
- false image, video, text and audio detection models
- analysis of misleading content distribution networks
- collaborations with institutions such as Elections Canada and the University of Ottawa
This work is part of our ethical AI mission, serving the common good.
A strategic partnership with the University of Ottawa
Since 2024, CRIM has been working closely with the University of Ottawa’s Information Integrity Laboratory as part of the Disinformation Centre. This partnership led to the organization of Disinformation Day in the AI Age, bringing together over 30 experts to explore the multidimensional challenges of visual, multimodal and audio disinformation.
A multidimensional, collaborative approach
CRIM adopts a global approach, combining scientific expertise, technical rigor and interdisciplinary dialogue. At the March 27, 2025 event, scientists, communications specialists and decision-makers discussed the challenges of misinformation.
A recognized and documented commitment
CRIM’s work has been presented in various panels and publications, affirming its key role in the fight against multimodal misinformation. A condensed version of the main report is available free of charge, serving as a reference for all those involved in this fight.
The state of DVM
Among the recent initiatives undertaken by this partnership between CRIM and the Laboratoire sur l’intégrité de l’information, a report was published to take stock of visual and multimodal misinformation (VMM), analyze its social, scientific and technological impacts, identify existing initiatives and technological solutions, and serve as a reference for those involved in the fight against VMM. The report is available free of charge by filling in the form below.
