CRIM’s expertise at the service of Montreal firefighters!

CRIM has been working with the City of Montréal for several years now, as part of the Stratégie montréalaise, ville intelligente et numérique 2014-2017, to help it improve its practices and many of its computer and technology systems.

One of the mandates of CRIM in 2017 was the design of prediction tools for the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM).

Project

First, a tool for predicting the response time to alerts was developed. Its objective is to predict the time required for a SIM unit to arrive at the scene of an alert from a fire station. This tool predicts these times according to several parameters (time of day, year, type of workforce, traffic, etc).

The CRIM team also developed a risk prediction tool for two categories of incidents: first responder calls and fires. In order to predict the level of risk, the tool uses incident history, as well as external data sources such as the weather, the building register of Montréal and certain socio-demographic indicators that can represent risk factors.

These two prediction tools will be integrated into the SIM’s operational activities within a dashboard designed by the City of Montréal’s Information Technology department (STI). These tools are part of a larger project to create a comprehensive simulation system that can be used as a decision support software. This project called upon CRIM’s expertise in data science and systems architecture.
